ACCELERANTS

Unlocking faster, more effective biodiversity action

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is working with members to explore a set of practical actions that enable faster and more effective implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). Building on the analysis gathered in the document "Gaps and Opportunities for Accelerating Progress in Implementing the KMGBF", this work seeks to identify, understand, and operationalize systemic actions that can drive implementation at scale.

Accelerants are high-leverage, mutually reinforcing actions that unlock faster and more effective NBSAP implementation. They address structural barriers, strengthen enabling systems and unlock scalable, transformative biodiversity outcomes. Countries can move from fragmented efforts to sustained, system-wide progress.

Objectives

Identify implementation gaps affecting progress toward NBSAP and Global Biodiversity Framework targets.

Define practical accelerants that can strengthen enabling systems and support more coherent implementation.

Produce guidance and resources to inform implementation in the lead-up to 2030.

Engage countries and partners in shaping shared learning on accelerants.

Why it matters

Accelerants focus on the broader systems that influence implementation and impact — including coordination, inclusion, finance, policy alignment, and institutional capacity. Strengthening these foundations can help countries move from fragmented efforts toward more sustained and integrated action.

Why it matters

Accelerants focus on the broader systems and conditions that influence implementation and impact, including coordination, inclusion, finance, policy alignment, and institutional capacity. Strengthening these conditions can help countries move from fragmented efforts toward more sustained and integrated action.

How it works

The accelerants framework builds on:

  • A review of implementation gaps and constraints
  • Identification of high-level categories of accelerants
  • Ongoing input from countries, partners, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, civil society, youth, the private sector, and research institutions

Proposed accelerants are grouped into broad categories, including:

  1. Implementation pathways
  2. Diversity and inclusion
  3. Integration and alignment
  4. Enabling environments
  5. Systemic transformation

Consultation and refinement are ongoing.

Timeline

2025-2026
