New Global Report Highlights Synergies Between Climate and Biodiversity Action

A new global report, commissioned by GIZ and developed under the Global Project "Strengthening National Implementation of Global Biodiversity Targets" and the EU’s Euroclima programme, sheds light on how countries can effectively align their climate and biodiversity agendas. Titled "Building Synergies Between Biodiversity and Climate Insights from countries on NBSAP and NDC planning and implementation", the publication explores how national strategies can be jointly planned and implemented to deliver stronger outcomes for people and the planet.

The report highlights the urgent need to bridge the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). These two landmark agreements are deeply interconnected, and success in one depends on progress in the other. However, translating this interdependence into real-world action remains a challenge. As of late May 2025, 54 countries had submitted updated NBSAPs aligned with the GBF, and efforts to update NDCs ahead of COP30 in 2025 are ongoing.

Drawing from ten national case studies—including Brazil, Colombia, Madagascar, and Indonesia—the publication offers concrete examples of how countries are creating linkages between their NBSAPs and NDCs. It outlines key strategies, common barriers, and innovative practices to build more coherent national approaches that maximize co-benefits for climate and biodiversity.

This resource is intended for government planners, national focal points, civil society, and local communities seeking to strengthen coordination between the two agendas. It offers lessons, tools, and insights to guide future policy processes and implementation efforts.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led initiative to accelerate the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), raise their political profile, and drive collective action for nature. It is co-chaired by Colombia and Germany and supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by the Secretariat of the CBD, UNDP and UNEP. Join the conversation on LinkedIn and become a member today.
