Colombia Confirmed as Official Host of the Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP16) DECEMBER 19, 2023 Colombia has been officially confirmed as the host country for CBD COP16, the Sixteenth Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity. The Bureau of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD met on 15 December and officially accepted Colombia’s offer. The conference will be held from October 21 to November 1, 2024. CBD COP16 presents a critical opportunity to build upon the momentum of the landmark Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted at COP15 in December 2022. This framework sets ambitious goals for halting biodiversity loss and restoring nature by 2030. With its strong track record of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, and being home to 10% of the world’s biodiversity, Colombia is a compelling choice as host. Driving the integration of national climate and biodiversity frameworks for 2030 action

The climate crisis cannot be solved unless we protect biodiversity is the key message from a ministerial roundtable to discuss the importance, challenges, and opportunities in adopting a synergetic approach in the design and implementation of national climate and biodiversity plans and strategies, in support of achieving the goals of both the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, as well as the Sustainable Development Goals. Hosted by the UNFCCC COP28 and CBD COP15 Presidencies, governments and non-state actors will come together to launch an implementation agenda that takes forward ambitious and integrated nature and climate action for planet and people.

NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and UNEP-WCMC Join Forces to Support the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

In a resounding display of collaboration and commitment, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and UNEP-WCMC co-hosted a significant side-event during the SBSTTA meeting. Titled “Supporting the implementation and monitoring of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework: The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and the Strengthening National Biodiversity Monitoring Systems Initiative,” this event shed light on two pioneering initiatives aimed at bolstering national efforts to implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF). Empowering National Implementation: NBSAP Accelerator Partnership The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, spearheaded by Colombia and Germany, is poised to play a pivotal role in enhancing national capacities to deliver updated National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs). With support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the Secretariat to the Convention on Biological Diversity (SCBD), the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is well-equipped to make a significant impact.
