Advancing Biodiversity Integration Through the GGGI IKI SYMBIOTIC Project in Kenya
June 2025
To support national efforts in biodiversity mainstreaming, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership participated in the launch of the GGGI IKI SYMBIOTIC Project on 26 June 2025 in Nairobi. The project focuses on integrating biodiversity into Kenya’s key economic sectors in line with the country’s NBSAP and the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
Backed by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), the SYMBIOTIC Project aims to strengthen policy coherence, build institutional capacity, and advance natural capital accounting. It will also contribute to biodiversity-friendly policy development, improve conservation-related communication, and provide targeted capacity support for both government and private sector actors.
Looking ahead, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and GGGI will identify areas for collaboration, especially in capacity development, to support the effective delivery of Kenya’s NBSAP commitments and contributions to the GBF.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led global initiative that supports the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to collectively achieve the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and, ultimately, the global vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. It is co-chaired by Colombia and Germany and supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by the Secretariat of the CBD, UNDP and UNEP.
