Developing a roadmap and advocacy strategy to align sectoral policies with Kenya’s NBSAP and the KMGBF

Kenya convened a national multi-stakeholder workshop to advance the alignment of sectoral public policy instruments with the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). The workshop, held under the BIODEV2030 Phase II initiative, built on previous engagements held earlier in the year and brought together government, civil society, private sector, research institutions, and development partners to strengthen biodiversity mainstreaming across agriculture, livestock, and forestry.
The workshop provided a platform to disseminate three validated policy briefs, with recommendations for small-scale agriculture, horticulture, pastoralism, and charcoal production, and to strengthen shared understanding of actionable steps needed for implementation. Updates from the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry (MoECCF) on the outcomes of recent CBD SBSTTA negotiations helped ensure coherence between global goals and national priorities.
Participants discussed the roadmap and advocacy strategy required to promote political uptake, mobilize resources, and guide policy reform. The event also fostered collaboration among sectors and institutions working to reduce biodiversity pressures arising from unsustainable production practices.
The multi-stakeholder process contributes to Kenya’s ongoing efforts to align national policies with KMGBF targets 10, 14, and 18, reinforcing the country’s commitment to safeguarding ecosystems while supporting sustainable livelihoods.
