Kenya Mobilizes Stakeholders to Drive Biodiversity Implementation
June 16, 2025
Nairobi, Kenya
Kenya's Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry is leading the national efforts to improve coordination around the implementation of its National Biodiversity Strategy and Plan (NBSAP). Along with stakeholders, Kenya is revitalizing the role of its NBSAP Implementation Committee as a central platform to support collaboration and coherence across biodiversity-related actions.
A recent technical meeting in Nairobi brought together key partners to discuss concrete steps toward operationalizing the Committee and ensuring broad, inclusive participation, reflecting Kenya’s ongoing commitment to a whole-of-government and whole-of-society approach and alignment with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is supporting this process by providing technical input and coordination through its in-country facilitator, David Githaia. An upcoming event to formally launch the partnership in Kenya is expected to further reinforce momentum and stakeholder engagement around these national initiatives.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led initiative to accelerate the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), raise their political profile, and drive collective action for nature. It is supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by UNEP, UNDP and the Secretariat of the CBD.
