Recent engagement in SBSTTA-27 provided an opportunity to deepen technical collaboration and strengthen alignment between Kenya’s biodiversity priorities and global policy processes under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
Supporting coordinated preparation for SBSTTA-27
Through its in-country facilitator David Githaiga, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership supported the Kenyan government in preparing for SBSTTA-27, including the organization of a national preparation meeting that brought together representatives from government agencies, civil society organizations, academia, NGOs, and the private sector.
This inclusive process helped consolidate technical inputs and ensure that Kenya’s positions reflected national biodiversity priorities while contributing to constructive global dialogue. The facilitator’s support reinforced institutional coordination across sectors engaged in conservation, restoration, health, monitoring, and implementation of the National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP).
Contributing to global discussions on biodiversity, health, and restoration
During SBSTTA-27, the facilitator for Kenya also participated in the side event “Integrating Biodiversity Restoration, Animal Welfare, and One Health: From Guidelines to Action and Evaluation.” The session explored how linking biodiversity conservation, wildlife health and welfare, and human well-being can strengthen policy implementation and accelerate progress on the KMGBF and the Global Action Plan on Biodiversity and Health (GAPBH).
Drawing on national experience, Kenya contributed to discussions on how existing wildlife and ecosystem data can inform science-based monitoring frameworks and support integrated approaches to biodiversity implementation.
These efforts contribute to Kenya’s ongoing work to advance progress toward the KMGBF targets and the shared global vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050.
