Renewed Support Fuels NBSAP Accelerator Partnership’s MatchMaking Mechanism
17 March 2025 - The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is taking innovative steps to mobilize resources and support countries in implementing their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Germany has reinforced its commitment to this effort with a €19.5 million contribution to the partnership, enabling the establishment of the NBSAP Accelerator Action Account—a last-resource reserve designed to strengthen the MatchMaking Mechanism.
The MatchMaking Mechanism is a core acceleration support that connects country requests for NBSAP review and implementation with necessary technical and financial resources. The NBSAP Accelerator Action Account, a dedicated multi-partner trust fund (MPTF), helps bridge funding gaps for countries that do not immediately secure a match, ensuring maximum technical support and fulfillment of member requests, particularly for those that are difficult to support through existing resources.
Many countries struggle to meet their biodiversity commitments due to financial constraints, technical capacity limitations, and fragmented systems. As of today, only 49 countries have submitted updated NBSAPs. The partnership’s MatchMaking Mechanism directly addresses these challenges by connecting countries with donors and technical partners to drive action.
With the creation of the Accelerator Action Account, the MatchMaking Mechanism will become even more effective.
The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is co-chaired by Colombia and Germany and hosted by UNEP, UNDP and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity. It offers a Facilitator Programme and a MatchMaking Mechanism, supporting its members and partners to advance NBSAPs and the 23 targets of the KMGBF.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led initiative to accelerate the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), raise their political profile, and drive collective action for nature. It is supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by UNEP, UNDP and the Secretariat of the CBD.
