Strengthening public policies for biodiversity: Kenya hosts national dialogue on sectoral reform

A national workshop was recently held in Nairobi to align sectoral public policy instruments in agriculture, livestock, and forestry with Kenya’s updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

The event, convened under the BIODEV2030 Phase 2 initiative, aimed to catalyze cross-sectoral reforms that will mainstream biodiversity into Kenya’s economic planning, with a focus on dryland ecosystems and strategic production sectors such as horticulture, charcoal production, and pastoralism.

  • Through a science-based and multi-stakeholder process, the workshop:
  • Reviewed existing economic pressures and policy gaps;
  • Identified priority measures for reform;
  • Gathered input for sector-specific policy briefs;
  • And initiated steps towards a roadmap for implementation and political buy-in.

These efforts are central to ensuring that Kenya’s biodiversity goals are fully integrated into development policies and supported by coordinated actions at both the national and county levels. The workshop also contributed to the development of a bankable project concept for biodiversity conservation in Kajiado County and southern Kenya more broadly.

Kenya’s leadership in aligning public policy with global biodiversity goals offers a strong example of how countries can translate international commitments into concrete, locally grounded action.

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led global initiative that supports the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to collectively achieve the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and, ultimately, the global vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. It is co-chaired by Colombia and Germany and supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by the Secretariat of the CBD, UNDP and UNEP.
