Sub-regional workshop and dialogue for the Pacific small island developing States
Apia, Samoa
26–28 May 2025
The Pacific Subregional Workshop on “Promoting Policy Coherence for Environmental Governance in the Climate and Nature Nexus” will take place from 26 to 28 May 2025 in Apia, Samoa. Convened by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) and other regional partners, the workshop aims to support Pacific Island countries in strengthening national coordination and cooperation between climate and biodiversity policy processes.
Across three days, the workshop will:
Highlight the role of science-policy interfaces and policy coherence in advancing integrated action on biodiversity and climate change;
Introduce tools and guidelines to support national implementation through enhanced coordination across multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs);
Facilitate group exercises using a biodiversity–climate nexus self-assessment checklist;
Identify regional priorities and collaborative mechanisms for advancing whole-of-government and whole-of-society approaches.
The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led initiative to accelerate the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs), raise their political profile, and drive collective action for nature. It is supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by UNEP, UNDP and the Secretariat of the CBD.
