The Department of Environment and Natural Resources Biodiversity Management Bureau (DENR-BMB) launched the country's updated National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (PBSAP 2024-2040) which includes five priorities strategies for its implementation, as highlighted by the bureau's Assistant Director Mariglo Rosaida I. Laririt at the 32nd Philippine Biodiversity Symposium in Iloilo City.
Ms Laririt presented an outline of the updated PBSAP, and its priorities: effective protected area management, species extinction prevention and recovery, biodiversity mainstreaming, pollution and Invasive and Alien Species (IAS) reduction, and ecosystem restoration for climate resilience. Developed through a multistakeholder process, the NPBSAP delivers on the Philippines' commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

During the symposium, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership participated in several workshops co-organized by the DENR-BMB, including one on the preliminary stocktaking of potential Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs), and one on the discussions on National Action Plan for Ecosystems Restoration and Species Extinction Prevention (NAPERSEP).

The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership is a country-led global initiative that supports the implementation of National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) to collectively achieve the goals and targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and, ultimately, the global vision of living in harmony with nature by 2050. It is co-chaired by Colombia and Germany and supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI), the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the global project “GBF Implementation,” implemented by GIZ. Its work is facilitated by a Global Coordination Unit (GCU) hosted by the Secretariat of the CBD, UNDP and UNEP.
