The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership in Kenya participated in a regional workshop supported by the EU-funded African Wildlife Initiative (AWI). Hosted in Nairobi on August 5-6, the event “Advancing Species Conservation for Sustainable Impact in Eastern and Southern Africa” brought together government agencies, civil society organizations, Indigenous Peoples, local communities, conservation practitioners, and donors to exchange experiences and explore collaborative solutions.

The workshop showcased achievements and lessons from the African Wildlife Initiative, with discussions on integrating species conservation into biodiversity planning and aligning efforts with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Sessions addressed human–wildlife conflict, governance and policy frameworks, community engagement, and the role of data in conservation decision-making.

Representatives from across the region shared best practices, identified opportunities for scaling up successful approaches, and strengthened networks for transboundary and national cooperation. The event concluded with recommendations to embed species conservation more deeply into NBSAPs and to advance collective action to halt species extinction.
