Can global cooperation finally solve our most pressing environmental crises? A recent assessment suggests so.

The rapid capacity needs assessment (RCNA) conducted by the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership made it clear that countries everywhere need acceleration support. The study showed that both coordinated efforts and individualized solutions are critical for nations to meet their national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAPs) and achieve the targets set by the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).

The results of the RCNA highlight the risk of repeating past failures if we don’t leverage our collective capacity to address the environmental crisis. It also emphasizes the need for increased political will, financial resources, and innovative approaches to reverse nature loss.

Key findings from the RCNA report include:

• A universal need for financial and technical support.
• The necessity for tailored solutions to meet unique regional needs.
• Global interest in knowledge sharing but hesitance about finance access.
• Lack of confidence in meeting specific GBF targets (15, 18, 19), which involve gross economic actions and policy controls on large corporations.

The RCNA, completed with input from government representatives of 45 countries, is part of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership’s ongoing efforts to tackle challenges and seize opportunities in accelerating action for nature and achieve the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF).
