Kenya advances its 7th National Biodiversity Report through multi-stakeholder consultation

In preparation for the global reporting deadline under the Convention on Biological Diversity, Kenya convened a technical drafting and consolidation workshop to finalize its Seventh National Biodiversity Report. The meeting took place from 24 to 27 February 2026 in Machakos, bringing together institutions responsible for biodiversity policy, data collection, and implementation.
TheThe workshop was convened by the State Department for Environment and Climate Change and served as a collaborative platform to review and consolidate national data across sectors contributing to biodiversity implementation.
Participants included representatives from government ministries and agencies, non-governmental organizations, Indigenous Peoples and local community representatives, academia, the private sector, and regional technical partners, including the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD), which also serves as a regional technical support centre under the Convention on Biological Diversity.
Coordinating national biodiversity reporting
National biodiversity reporting requires coordination across institutions responsible for environmental governance, research, and implementation. The Machakos workshop created space for participating organizations to contribute technical inputs and data needed to complete the report and reflect the country’s progress toward biodiversity commitments.
Through collaborative working sessions, participants reviewed reporting sections covering biodiversity targets, implementation progress, financing, and institutional capacity. This process helped ensure that the report reflects a consolidated national perspective and incorporates contributions from multiple sectors involved in biodiversity management.
Meeting a global reporting milestone
The Seventh National Report forms part of the monitoring and review process under the Convention on Biological Diversity. These reports help track national progress toward implementing biodiversity commitments and contribute to the global assessment of biodiversity action.
Kenya successfully completed the report ahead of the 28 February 2026 submission deadline, marking an important milestone in the country’s biodiversity reporting process.
Supporting national implementation efforts
The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership was represented at the workshop by Kenya’s National Facilitator, David Githaiga, who participated in the discussions and shared insights on ongoing work supporting NBSAP implementation in the country.
Through its Facilitator Programme, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership supports countries in strengthening coordination across institutions and advancing the implementation of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans.
