- Kenya’s collaboration with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership was formally announced at the inaugural NBCM Technical Committee meeting, which established Kenya’s NBCM Secretariat, defined institutional roles, and advanced a resource mobilization strategy for NBSAP implementation.
- Working with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership will support targeted technical and financial support through its Facilitator Programme and MatchMaking Mechanism, helping translate global biodiversity commitments into concrete implementation.
- Kenya’s leadership reaffirmed support for a model of inclusive, whole-of-society governance, inspiring regional collaboration and advancing global progress for nature and people.
Kenya formally recognized its membership and engagement with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership during its National Biodiversity Coordination Mechanism (NBCM) meeting, marking a tangible moment of commitment by Kenyan leaders to advancing the nation’s biodiversity plan. Kenya is a member of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership and hosts an NBSAP Accelerator Partnership facilitator within its ministry responsible for helping move commitments into action.
The gathering brought together a wide range of stakeholders, including senior government officials, representatives from development partners, civil society organizations, academia, the private sector, and diplomatic missions from Colombia, France, Canada, Norway, and Germany.
Supporting Kenya's leadership in biodiversity action
Representatives from Kenya’s Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry underscored the urgent need to accelerate conservation actions across Kenya’s rich biodiverse ecosystems, which are increasingly threatened by habitat loss, climate change, pollution and illegal wildlife trade. While Kenya’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) provides a strong foundation, implementation remains a central challenge– an issue the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership aims to help address.
Through dedicated, country-driven technical and financial support mechanisms, including the MatchMaking Mechanism and the Facilitator Programme, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership helps countries like Kenya translate global biodiversity commitments into tangible local results. David Githaiga, Kenya’s NBSAP Accelerator Partnership facilitator, helps identify Kenya’s NBSAP implementation needs, enhance stakeholder coordination, coordinate actions across diverse social and government sectors, and prepare technical and financial requests for the MatchMaking Mechanism–all in support of Kenya contributing to the targets of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the global goal of living in harmony with nature by 2050. Through increased collaboration and accelerated action, these targets are becoming a more attainable reality.
A call to action
Kenya’s leadership and active engagement with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership reflects growing momentum for biodiversity action. The gathering marked a moment of partnership and shared ambition. Facilitator Githaiga, will continue to work closely with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, the Government of Kenya, civil society, researchers, the private sector, and development partners to accelerate NBSAP implementation, strengthen biodiversity governance, and achieve increased results on the ground.
