As governments navigate the complex structures that impact nature, addressing the role of businesses, transnational companies, and financial institutions has become essential. All businesses are dependent on biodiversity in some way. Therefore, helping businesses understand and acknowledge their dependencies and impacts is vital for change.

Governments, alongside partners and supporters, might be best poised to help businesses begin to see their connection with biodiversity. Through legal, administrative and policy measures, governments can facilitate structures like assessments and certifications, inciting action by businesses to assess and monitor the impact of their activities on biodiversity. Through these measures, company members and decision-makers can begin to see the business’s relationship with biodiversity, including both its implications for biodiversity loss and the risks posed by biodiversity loss to its operations.

As part of its ongoing commitment to advancing NBSAP implementation, the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership has begun to support countries, institutions, and non-state actors in achieving global biodiversity targets. Outlined in the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), targets 15 and 16 emphasise the importance of sustainable consumption and production patterns, business-related biodiversity risks, and the integration of biodiversity values into national and local policy.

Target 15 aims to ensure that all businesses and financial institutions regularly monitor, assess, and transparently disclose their impacts on biodiversity. This target encourages the adoption of sustainable practices and the integration of biodiversity considerations into business models.

Target 16 promotes sustainable consumption and production patterns, including ecolabels and certification schemes. These tools help consumers make informed choices that support biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

The webinar will include important case studies and best practices, such as:

• Best practices in implementing sustainable public procurement, ecolabels, and environmental certifications to support global biodiversity goals,
• Case studies from governments integrating ecolabels and sustainable procurement in their updated NBSAPs for COP16, and
• Case studies from certification schemes promoting biodiversity conservation.
