In early April, the Ministry of Agriculture, Environment, and Fisheries (MAAP) organized a workshop with Mozambique’s NBSAP technical group, led by the National Directorate for the Environment (DINAB). The session focused on developing a roadmap for reviewing and updating the country’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), a crucial step in aligning national efforts with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF) adopted at the 15th Conference of Parties (COP15) of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The workshop brought together senior government representatives from various departments within MAAP, including the national NBSAP Focal Point and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Gender Focal Point, along with key partners like Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership through its recently appointed in-country facilitator, Hermínio Elias Mulungo, to engage in a collaborative and forward-thinking discussion. It  resulted in several important outcomes for biodiversity plans in Mozambique, including:

• Agreement on the proposed timeline and key milestones for the NBSAP review.
• Identification of strategic actions and institutional responsibilities.
• Initial discussions on budget planning and resource mobilization.

Mozambique’s NBSAP review and update process marks a significant milestone in strengthening the nation’s biodiversity governance. The roadmap outlines the necessary steps to ensure the updated NBSAP aligns with international commitments and national priorities. It also integrates a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach, ensuring that local communities, various government ministries, and gender considerations are included throughout the development and implementation of biodiversity plans.

The roadmap aims to inform the new Minister of MAAP about the country’s progress under the CBD Convention and outline the next steps. Submission of the final version to the Minister’s office signifies a crucial step toward coordinated NBSAP implementation, supporting long-term biodiversity conservation efforts.
