In collaboration with the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, the Ministry of Public Works, Housing, and Water Resources, through the National Directorate of Water Resources Management (DNGRH), hosted a two-day meeting focused on developing a project proposal for the water sector. The initiative aims to address both the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) and Mozambique’s national biodiversity targets submitted to the CBD in 2024.

The meeting engaged new specialists from the water sector, including young water professionals, and was structured into two main parts:

The first day focused on capacity building, beginning with a presentation of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership’s work, followed by an overview of the 23 targets of the GBF and indicators, as well as the country’s new national biodiversity targets. A discussion on biodiversity and the current state of water resources in Mozambique identified several priority areas for action/needs:

• River connectivity;
• Citizen science initiatives;
• Environmental flow management;
• Water protection areas, including headwaters;
• Nature-based solutions;
• Strengthening river-based committees.
• Digital tools to enhance freshwater biodiversity management and monitoring.
• Enhancing the voice and participation of local communities, women, and youth in multi-stakeholder water resource management debates.

The second day concentrated on drafting the project proposal and gathering input from participants. The proposal is currently being developed and aims to incorporate the identified priority areas into practical initiatives for the water sector.

This collaborative effort highlights Mozambique’s dedication to progressing its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) through focused actions in the water sector. By involving young professionals, local communities, and multi-stakeholder platforms, the country aims to align national initiatives with global biodiversity objectives while enhancing local capacity and engagement.
