On 24 September, Peru held the third ordinary meeting of the CONADIB, bringing together representatives from government and civil society to discuss key issues for the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and Peru’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan.
The meeting provided an important space for national institutions to exchange information, review progress and coordinate priorities related to biodiversity policy and implementation. The agenda included follow-up to the recent sessions of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) and the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-7), as well as Peru’s participation in COP17 in Armenia.
Bringing the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership into the national coordination process
The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership played an active role in supporting the Government of Peru and MINAM in organizing and advancing this national coordination space. Through its engagement in Peru, the Accelerator is helping connect national biodiversity priorities with available international cooperation, technical expertise and opportunities for implementation support.
During the meeting, Alfredo Gálvez, Peru National Facilitator of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, presented the progress of the support being provided to MINAM in advancing implementation of the NBSAP. He also highlighted the Accelerator’s role in identifying and channeling technical assistance through its MatchMaking Mechanism, including opportunities linked to Peru’s preparations for COP17.
Connecting global biodiversity discussions with Peru’s COP17 priorities
The meeting also provided a space to review Peru’s priority positions and follow-up from SBSTTA-28, held in Nairobi from 27 July to 1 August 2026, and SBI-7 from 4 to 12 August 2026.
The discussions covered a broad range of issues relevant to implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, including marine and coastal biodiversity, sustainable wildlife management, scientific and technical needs, the strategic review of the programme of work on protected areas, the monitoring framework, synthetic biology, digital sequence information, resource mobilization and the financial mechanism.
These discussions helped connect international biodiversity processes with Peru’s national priorities and preparations for COP17, while also providing an opportunity to review progress in coordination with government sectors on the technical sheets of the NBSAP Action Plan.
Looking ahead
The continued engagement of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership through CONADIB provides an opportunity to strengthen coordination among national institutions and ensure that technical and financial support is increasingly connected to Peru’s implementation priorities.
As Peru moves toward COP17 and continues implementing its NBSAP Action Plan, the Accelerator will continue working with MINAM and national stakeholders to identify concrete areas where international technical assistance, knowledge and partnerships can contribute to implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
