On 25 June 2026, representatives from government institutions, civil society, academia, Indigenous Peoples’ organizations, and other members of Peru’s National Biodiversity Commission gathered in Lima for the Commission’s second meeting of the year. Convened by the Ministry of Environment (MINAM), the meeting provided an opportunity to review ongoing biodiversity initiatives, assess implementation progress, and identify priorities for the months ahead.

As Peru moves into the implementation phase of its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan, CONADIB continues to play a central role as the country’s primary multi-stakeholder platform for biodiversity coordination, dialogue, and policy guidance.

The meeting opened with remarks from Mirbel Epiquien, General Director of Biological Diversity, reaffirming the importance of collaboration among institutions and sectors to address biodiversity challenges and achieve national commitments.

Participants reviewed progress reports from CONADIB’s technical working groups and received updates on the implementation of the Commission’s Biennial Work Plan. These discussions provided an opportunity to identify achievements, challenges, and opportunities for strengthening coordination across institutions responsible for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use.

An important part of the agenda focused on preparations for upcoming meetings under the Convention on Biological Diversity. Participants received updates on key issues that will be discussed during the twenty-eighth meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA-28) and the seventh meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation (SBI-7), both scheduled to take place in Nairobi in the coming months.

These discussions highlighted the strong connection between national implementation efforts and global biodiversity processes. As countries accelerate implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, platforms such as CONADIB provide an important mechanism for ensuring that national priorities are informed by international developments while contributing national experiences to global discussions.

The meeting also recognized the contributions of institutions and partners involved in activities commemorating the International Day for Biological Diversity and provided space for dialogue among participants on emerging biodiversity priorities. Through open discussion, members identified areas where greater collaboration and coordination could help strengthen implementation efforts.

The broad participation reflected the shared responsibility required to implement Peru’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan. Effective implementation depends not only on government leadership but also on the active engagement of Indigenous Peoples, academia, civil society, the private sector, and development partners.

As Peru advances the implementation of its NBSAP, CONADIB will continue serving as a key platform for coordination, monitoring, and stakeholder engagement. The Commission’s role in bringing together diverse actors helps ensure that biodiversity priorities remain integrated across sectors and levels of government.

With the continued support of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership, the Government of Peru is strengthening the institutional foundations needed to translate national biodiversity commitments into concrete actions and measurable results. Through sustained dialogue, technical collaboration, and alignment with global biodiversity processes, the country is building momentum toward the achievement of its national biodiversity targets and the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
