As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the links between tourism, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable economic development, a working meeting was recently held with the Ministry of Economy, led by His Excellency the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Jorge Jairoce. The meeting explored opportunities under the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF), highlighting tourism as a strategic sector for advancing Mozambique’s national biodiversity targets.

The session featured a presentation on the work of the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership (NBSAP AP) in Mozambique, followed by constructive discussions that helped identify priorities, challenges, and opportunities for cross-sectoral collaboration. Key topics included:

• Community-based tourism as a mechanism for inclusive development and biodiversity conservation;
• Hunting tourism and its role in the sustainable management of natural resources;
• Exchange of experiences and good practices;
• Identification of priority sectoral needs;
• Transformation of identified needs into concrete project proposals.

In line with the agreements reached, a set of key reference documents was shared to guide a joint internal review, including:

• The final version of national biodiversity targets aligned with the Global Biodiversity Framework;
• A project development template from the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership;
• The National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), currently under revision to align with the updated targets;
• The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership presentation.

As agreed, the Ministry of Economy will organise a follow-up meeting to translate the identified sectoral needs into concrete project proposals.

The meeting reaffirmed the strong institutional commitment to integrating biodiversity considerations into the tourism sector, recognizing tourism’s potential as a catalyst for sustainable economic development in Mozambique. Enhanced intersectoral coordination and the development of bankable project proposals are key steps toward the effective implementation of national biodiversity targets aligned with the KMGBF.

All parties reiterated their commitment to continued collaboration and to the timely and effective delivery of this joint agenda, ensuring tangible outcomes for biodiversity conservation, economic development, and local communities.
