Vanuatu advances toward finalizing its revised NBSAP

NBSAP Accelerator Partnership | Updates

November 18, 2025

Vanuatu continues to advance the final revision of its National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP) 2026-2030, following a national Validation Workshop with representatives from all six provinces. This important milestone reflects the country’s commitment to whole-of-society engagement, ensuring that the revised NBSAP captures local priorities and the concerns of communities across the islands.

The workshop and subsequent drafting activities were supported by the wider NBSAP coordination team, including the NBSAP Accelerator Partnership’s in-country facilitator, who assisted in organising discussions, guiding consultations, and consolidating provincial and national inputs. Participants contributed not only to the national action plan but also to tailored Provincial Biodiversity Strategic Action Plans, helping strengthen alignment between national ambitions and provincial realities.

After the workshop, the NBSAP core writing team, bringing together representatives from the Departments of Environment, Climate Change, Agriculture, Forestry, Water, Fisheries and the in-country facilitator, held an intensive working session to finalise the full action plan. The team ensured that the revised plan reflects national and provincial priorities and is fully aligned with the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework headline indicators, strengthening Vanuatu’s ability to monitor progress and meet global reporting commitments. This whole-of-government effort is now progressing the revised Vanuatu NBSAP 2026–2030 toward completion.

The updated NBSAP presents an integrated “ridge-to-reef” vision linking terrestrial and marine ecosystems, reinforcing policy–practice connections, and promoting nature-positive development. In Vanuatu, biodiversity conservation is not only an environmental priority but also an economic, social, cultural, and resilience imperative.

The Government of Vanuatu invites partners, provinces, communities, and traditional custodians to continue working together to keep the islands rich in life, beauty, and opportunity for generations to come. The revised NBSAP is expected to be published by December 2025.
