Pacific nations advance the 30×30 target: Regional workshop strengthens collaboration ahead of COP17
- The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership participated in the Pacific Regional Workshop on KMGBF Target 3, held in Nadi, Fiji from 9–11 June 2026, convened by SPREP with support from the High Ambition Coalition for Nature and People and funded by the Government of Australia.
- The workshop brought together biodiversity focal points and protected area practitioners from across the Pacific to exchange practical experiences, identify common implementation challenges, and explore collaborative approaches to achieving the global 30×30 target.
- Pacific countries reaffirmed their global leadership in marine conservation and community-based management while identifying shared challenges in sustainable financing, biodiversity data management, monitoring systems, OECM recognition, and implementation capacity.
The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership participated in the Pacific Regional Workshop on Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF) Target 3: Conserve 30% of Land, Waters and Seas by 2030, held in Nadi, Fiji, from 9–11 June 2026. Convened by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) with support from the High Ambition Coalition (HAC) for Nature and People and funded by the Government of Australia, the workshop brought together biodiversity focal points and protected area practitioners from across the Pacific to strengthen regional cooperation and accelerate implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework’s Target 3.
The workshop reaffirmed the Pacific’s global leadership in biodiversity conservation. Many Pacific Island countries have already established extensive marine protected areas and continue to build upon long-standing customary and community-based conservation systems. Participants exchanged practical experiences, identified common implementation challenges, and explored collaborative approaches to achieving the global 30×30 target while recognising the unique governance systems and cultural heritage of Pacific communities. The event also provided an opportunity to strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners, including HAC, IUCN, and SPREP.
Accelerator Partnership tools and regional priorities
During the workshop, countries received updates on the Accelerator Partnership’s Matchmaking Mechanism and Accelerator Action Account, creating space to explore how these instruments can support Pacific countries in mobilising expertise and resources for Target 3 implementation. Discussions reaffirmed that while Pacific nations continue to demonstrate global leadership in community-based conservation and marine protection, they face common challenges related to sustainable financing, biodiversity data management, monitoring systems, OECM recognition, and implementation capacity.
The workshop also provided an important opportunity to strengthen the Pacific voice ahead of upcoming regional and global biodiversity discussions, including the 11th Pacific Conference on Nature Conservation and CBD COP17.
The NBSAP Accelerator Partnership remains committed to working alongside Pacific countries and regional partners to mobilise expertise, strengthen collaboration, and accelerate implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework across the region.
